Alpharetta Brief History

Downtown Alpharetta

Alpharetta is located in North Fulton County.

The history of Alpharetta dates back to the 1830’s when the Cherokee people were forcibly relocated under the Indian Removal Act. A trading post located next to a natural spring has since blossomed into what is now downtown Alpharetta.

Alpharetta was incorporated in 1858. At that time, the local economy was focused and farming cotton and many supporting businesses opened in the surrounding area.

After suffering near bankruptcy during the great depression, many farmers turned to livestock due to plummeting prices of cotton. Luckily, a few large corporations moved into the area to help supply the population with steady work.

After opening GA 400 in the 70’s, reasonable home prices, excellent schools and many jobs contributed to the explosive population growth.

Alpharetta is only 26 miles to the north from Atlanta, making it a reasonable commute. With no traffic, it only takes about 30 minutes to get downtown. With traffic, travel times can double.

Alpharetta’s Name Origin

There are two rumor’s on the origin of Alpharetta’s name:

  • It is a blend of greek works “alpha” meaning first and “retta” meaning city.
  • There was a southern song dating called “The Blue Juniata” that references an Indian girl named Alfarata.
