You can buy wine just about anywhere in Atlanta. Boxed wine at Kroger, international selections at Total Wine. But, how do you really know if what you are buying is any good to match for your palate? One word, experience. Finding an excellent wine shop can help with curating wines. Wines that they strongly recommend and personalize to your taste. Good thing there are many wine shops in Atlanta doing just that.

My Perspective on What Makes a Great Wine Shop in Atlanta

In my many years shopping for wine, there were a few key characteristics of a good wine shop that made me want to return over and again. I will share a few of these characteristics and then share some locations where to find the best wine shops around Atlanta.

Selection

As consumers, we want a wine shop with a nice selection of different varieties and the layout has to make sense so we are able to browse, along with the wine shop sommelier. You don’t need hundreds of different merlot’s, but it is paramount the wine shop stocks merlot’s that taste fantastic and they have to be unique enough that not every Publix has the same bottle.

Price

A variety of prices is critical for wine consumers. At wine shops, discount wine is not required. There are plenty of places to find that. The key is to find great wine for a variety of budgets. That way you don’t turn off beginners nor turn away wine enthusiasts who spend over $50 per bottle.

In the low to mid range, about under $30 a bottle, is really where the wine shop can help consumers find wine that really wows versus the consumer simply guessing what is good by some arbitrary price. There should be a great selection in the $15 to $30 dollar price point.

Advice and Service

Wine clubs that curate wine for a particular palate, help expand knowledge and expand the customers preferences over certain wine varietals. Or simply guiding a consumer who likes one variety to try something similar from a different region of the world.

Tasting Room and Shared Experience

Nights out with friends bonding over what kind of wine they like, and being able to sample various wines without needing to order an entire glass, makes for an enjoyable evening. Supplying the experience makes me want to come back.
