Milton, Ga is a picturesque suburb of Atlanta, located in North Fulton County. It is best known for its with rolling hills, dense forests and sprawling horse farms.
Milton is one of the safest suburbs in Atlanta and has some of the best schools in the state, making it an ideal place to raise a family.
Milton remains true to its rural setting roots. In some sections of Milton, home sites are required by law to exceed 1 acre. Today, subdivisions are scattered amongst the many equestrian farms and golf courses in the area.
However, Milton has plenty to keep the locals occupied, from parks, great restaurants and golf courses.
Some sections of Milton are seeing rapid growth, with denser housing. These area’s of Crabapple and Deerfield have many homes and townhomes being developed. Part of this urbanization is attracting more restaurants and boutique shops.
One other great thing about Milton is its location between Roswell, Woodstock, and Alpharetta. Both cities are a short 10 minute drive and Milton residents can easily enjoy the best of these Atlanta suburbs, while still returning home to their more rural settings and farms.

Best Things To Do In Milton, Ga
Being that it is a more rural, its a more sleepy section of town when it comes to nightlife and entertainment options. That’s more than ok with the residents as they are close to everything in metro Atlanta, yet they can enjoy the outdoors and open spaces. Here are some of the best things to do in Milton.
Golf
Golf is a primary entertainment option for Milton residents. While there are many public golf courses surrounding Milton, country clubs are the primary way to golf in the area. In fact, the only public course in Milton was recently closed and turned into very high end home sites.
The Manor, White Columns and Atlanta National are run by Clubcorp. All are wonderfully maintained golf courses.
Iron Horse Golf Club, previously known as Crooked Creek has a wonderful layout and the new owners are investing a lot into the club to bring it back to its former glory.
Echelon, while just over the border of Milton, offers semi-private golfing. For non members, tee times are usually available.
Cycle
While driving through the winding roads of Milton, you will notice many cyclists sharing the roads, especially on the weekends. The lower traffic and elevation changes make road cycling a favorite past time in the area.
Horseback Riding and Equestrian Centers
Driving across Milton, you will see horse farms and equestrian facilities everywhere. There are many that offer boarding and even lessons. Birmingham Park allows horses on the trails and Wills Park as an equestrian center that holds many competitions.
Scottsdale Farm
At first glance you wouldn’t consider a tree nursery as a tourist attraction, but Scottsdale Farm hosts plenty of family fun events like pumpkin patch, hay rides and even a corn maze in October. They also host an Easter egg hunt and during the year you can pick blueberries. Kids also love the interactions with the animals on the farm.
Matilida’s
Matilda’s Music Under the Pines is an outdoor music venue. Bring a cooler and some food and enjoy a night out under the stars, listening to live music.
Parks and Recreation
Providence Park in Milton has gone through renovations in 2021. Added to the park was a paved trail from the parking lot all the way to the lake. On the lake is a newly constructed covered pier, with room to fish or have a picnic.
Birmingham park has over a mile outer loop trail, with many interconnecting trails that you can extend your hike. Horses are allowed on the trail system.
Bell Memorial Park has Astroturf sports fields and many baseball fields. The playground next to the snack stand is fun for the little ones. There is a walking trail the runs along the perimeter of the park.
Wood Road is a dirt road that connects Birmingham highway with Freemanville Road. Parking is available at the intersection of Phillips Cir and Freemanville Road. The road is a little over 1.5 miles and you can walk, bike or jog out and back. As you explore, you will pass by many horse farms. It’s a rather scenic walk that takes you back in time.
Milton Tennis Center is a relatively newly purchased park. There are tennis courts and lessons available at the park.
Dining
Here are a few of our favorite restaurants in Milton. This is by no means an all inclusive list, these are a great start for someone visiting or just moving to the area.
- 7 Acre Bar and Grill is a “garden to fork” restaurant that features many international comfort dishes and they serve a great burger as well.
- The Union Restaurant is an eclectic restaurant serving homestyle comfort dishes. The locations features a large outdoor porch and other outside seating.
- Crabapple Tavern is a neighborhood tavern featuring a large barroom with a u shaped bar, perfect for socializing. The menu items are casual and are great value for what you get.
- Milton Tavern is the second location, just like Crabapple tavern, but with a slightly scaled down menu offering.
- Cue is a full service barbeque restaurant with some great ribs.
- Miltons Cuisine and Cocktails has and upscale Southern food style offering.
- Grand Champion Barbeque this is a fast casual barbeque restaurant, great for take out
- Campania Milton is the second location for Campania and serves authentic wood fired pizza’s and pasta.
- Olde Blind Dog is one of the best Irish Pub’s in metro Atlanta and is the original location for this concept.
- Bobby G’s has pub style food and Chicago style deep dish pizza’s.
Breweries and Brew Pubs
Milton is home to one of the many great breweries in metro Atlanta.
Six Bridges Brewing opened a second location in 2022 in the newly developed Crabapple neighborhood of Milton. Their first location was in Johns Creek.
Bars
Many of these bars double as great restaurants, but if I was going out for a casual night out for a beer or a few drinks in Milton, I would probably check these out. Please tell me if you disagree!

- Mazzy’s is a tavern and sports bar
- Billy Allen’s is a new venue for evening live music
Winery
The Painted Horse Winery is Milton’s first winery. There is always something going on from live music to equestrian excursions and wine tastings. Be sure to check out the upcoming event.s
Shopping
If you have serious mall style shopping needs, your best bet drive the short way to Alpharetta and go to either the North Point Mall or the Avalon.
In Milton, along Alpharetta Highway you will find a Target and Kohl’s and in the Crabapple area you will find boutique shops.
Milton Ga Events
Crabbapple Fest is an annual festival where the city closes Crabapple Road. The road becomes filled with antiques and artist booths. For the kids you will find rides and bounce houses.
Planning Your Visit
Milton is just over 30 miles from downtown Atlanta. Milton is located 42 miles North from Hartsfield Jackson Airport. It is accessible from 400 via exit 9, 10 or 11.
Parking in Milton is generally free. There are some sections of Milton with sidewalks, but mostly it is a car dependent area.
Hotels
There are a few hotels in Milton in the Deerfield area adjacent to Windward parkway. There are more options for full service hotels in Alpharetta, within a few miles.
