If you are a lover of history or architecture, you will definitely enjoy a visit to the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. This was my first visit, and granted, I did not know much about the life of Jimmy Carter as I was 1 year old when he left office. However, I left with a fondness for this President from Georgia. He seemed to be intelligent, hard-working and decent man who deeply cared about others.
The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum is located in the Poncey Highlands, which is an Atlanta neighborhood just east of downtown.
The Museum is situated on 35 acres and the grounds are beautifully maintained in a park like setting.
Why Visit The Museum?
Perhaps you want to revisit the life and legacy of Jimmy Carter, especially if you lived through his presidential campaign and his time in office. Or perhaps like me, you want to learn more about the US history. Either way, a trip to the Jimmy Carter Museum is worth it.
There was a lot of information about his work with the Carter center after his time in office. While some may know what the Carter Center is doing around the globe, there are people like me who had no idea all the good things they are doing for people. It’s inspiring.
There is also plenty of amazing things to see like his nobel peace prize, a Gates award and his medal of freedom.
My favorite exhibit was seeing all the campaign memorabilia and learning about the peanut brigade. There are many interesting T-shirts, signs and buttons.

What To Expect
The cost to enter when I visited was $12 and parking was free.
There is a gift shop with all of the books written about him and plenty of other interesting trinkets.
You may be wondering how long it takes to see everything at the Jimmy Carter Museum. The answer really depends on you. Will you watch every video and read every piece of historical information or will you only stop at a few things?
If you are going to skim the surface, you can probably get through it in thirty minutes. But what’s the point of that? There is so much history to see. Two hours is probably a good amount of time, if you are spending time reading through everything at every exhibit.
Some of the main exhibits are:
- Man from the Plains: Jimmy Carters young life
- Campaigning
- Oval Office
- Archives
- Day in the Life of the President
- Camp David
- The Carter – Post Presidency
Getting to the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum
If you are visiting from outside the city, the easiest way to visit the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum is by car or bus. There is free parking available around the museum. It is easily accessible from highway 85. It’s maybe a mile and half from the highway exit.
If you are already in the city, encircling the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum is a large park and the Freedom Park Trail. The Freedom Park Trail extends all the way from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. If you are up for walking or riding a scooter, you could do both of these amazing museums and get some exercise in between by using the trail.
The Freedom Park Trail also intersects with the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta Beltline if you choose to walk or bike to the museum.
If you choose to ride MARTA, you can take it to the Inman Park/Reynoldstown Stop and walk through Inman Park along the Freedom Walk Connector to the museum.
The Jimmy Carter Library is located at 441 John Lewis Freedom Pkwy NE, Atlanta, GA 30307.
