Surrounding the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum and the Carter Center is green space and the Freedom Park Trail. The Freedom Park Trail is a mixed use paved trail that extends from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Museum and becomes part of the Stone Mountain PATH, one of Atlanta’s best bike trails.

The trail connects many of the best downtown Atlanta neighborhoods. You can access the trail from Inman Park, Poncey-Highlands, Virginia Highlands, Candler Park, Sweet Auburn and Little 5 Points.

The trail also intersects with the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta Beltline.

This PATH in Atlanta connects many of the great parks and museums of Atlanta.

While you walk or ride on the trail you will see plenty of artwork. You will also be able to rent scooters, if you choose.

Along this trail, you can see and access:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park is just steps from the location where he was born and raised on Auburn Ave. The acreage around the park is beautifully manicured. There are many buildings to tour and exhibits to see while you are there.
  • Jimmy Carter Museum and Library is the Presidential Library of Jimmy Carter. You can learn about his childhood, the campaign, what he achieved in office and even see the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded.
  • Atlanta Beltline is a 22 mile loop of trails, green space and transit. It is under construction, but the Eastside trail section that intersects with the Freedom Park Trail is open.
  • Candler Park is a large park with a golf course.
  • Inman Park/Reynoldstown Marta (from the Freedom Park Trail Connector) is available to access the rest of the city.

Note About The Trail

The trail is an inner city park. When I walked the trail in the morning, there were many homeless people sleeping. They did not bother me in any way, but always use your best judgment and keep an eye around your surroundings.

  1. There are many paid parking lots on Moreland avenue near Little Five Points. Alternatively there is a paid lot in Inman Park I use at 299 North Highland Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30307. Or you could park in the paid lot near New Realm and ride the Eastside trail to the Freedom park trail.
