I heard from a coworker that one of the best Southern restaurants near Atlanta is in a nearby suburb. The restaurant they were talking about is Southbound in Chamblee. I can attest, not only is it a great Southern restaurant, it is also one of the best restaurants in Chamblee.
They told me about a dish that I just had to try for myself, Southern Ramen. It’s like Ramen noodles meet Brunswick stew.
Since I love both dishes, I had to try this fusion for myself.
Luck had it that I heading out to Chamblee to sample beers at Contrast brewery.
The Southbound Restaurant
From the moment you park in the lot, you can tell the restaurant owners put a lot of thought and work into the historic, 1800’s Southbound restaurant. You can smell the live fire and see the fresh cut wood station out front. It sets the stage for the great, traditional southern food with a modern twist.
The interior is completely renovated and was stripped down to the bare walls. You will find exposed brick walls and large plank wood floors.
To the right is a large bar area, where I sat for my meal. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded. However, I was there rather early on a weekday dinner because I was meeting friends for beers at 6.
I can imagine this restaurant gets busy on the weekends.
The Food At Southbound
Honestly, I knew I was going to order the Southern ramen. Looking over the menu though, I really wanted to order more than one thing.
The Chamblee HOT chicken sandwich looked amazing, the guy next to me was eating it.
The burger looked great, you know we are always looking for the best burger in and around Atlanta.
I could always go for smoked short rib.
I decided to order an appetizer, the deviled eggs. Honestly, I would have ordered something different. I didn’t read the fine print of the Southern ramen. It included an egg.
Either way, they were delicious. They came with bacon jam and small pieces of shaved ham.
For the main course, the ramen did not disappoint. It is a big, smokey bowl of comfort.
It’s loaded with noodles, pulled pork, collard greens and black eyed peas.
The broth ate a touch salty, but I didn’t mind it with this dish. You kind of expect it to taste salty, given how big the flavors are and how the smokey aroma pour out from this dish.
Overall, I am a big fan of this restaurant. It has an amazing atmosphere, service was incredible and the menu is full of creative, unique dishes to try.
Southbound is located at 5394 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341.
