Atlanta isn’t generally known for their bagels. When you think of breakfast in Atlanta, usually chicken and biscuits comes to mind. However, there are many places to find great bagels in Atlanta. Large chains dominate, but the local bagel shops and deli’s are serving bagels that rival what you would find on the street corners in New York City.

In this post, we will take a look at what makes a great bagel, a little history of the bagel and then where you can find a local bagel shop and share some of the larger chains that are all over the neighborhoods of Atlanta.

Best Atlanta Bagel

What is a Bagel?

I can’t describe what a bagel is better than this quote from an article in the New York Times

A bagel is a round bread made of simple, elegant ingredients: high-gluten flour, salt, water, yeast and malt. Its dough is boiled, then baked, and the result should be a rich caramel color; it should not be pale and blond. A bagel should weigh four ounces or less and should make a slight cracking sound when you bite into it instead of a whoosh. A bagel should be eaten warm and, ideally, should be no more than four or five hours old when consumed. All else is not a bagel.

New York Times

History of the Bagel

The first written records of the bagel date to the year 1610. They showed up then in the community regulations of the Polish city of Krakow, which dictated that bagels were to be given as a gift to women after childbirth.

Back in medieval Poland, their round shape led to the belief that bagels had magical powers.
