Are you looking for fun places to go for a bike ride in and around the city of Atlanta? Although Atlanta is quite hilly in certain spots, you can still find many flat bike trails and greenways.
The best part is that the many cities in and around Atlanta are investing into expanding and connecting paved biking trails and walking trails. Most of these bike trails connect the greenspaces and parks in Atlanta.
Here you will find all of the best Atlanta bike trails in this post.
Many of these Atlanta bike trails are under construction and expanding.
This is great for cyclists, but bad for documentation. We keep this site up to date to the best of our abilities, but make sure you check the official sites for the most up to date information on the completion of trails. We will link to useful information on construction status.
If you are looking to go off road, I suggest you look at our best mountain biking trails near Atlanta post.
Let’s take a look at the best bike trails in and around Atlanta!
Atlanta Beltline
The Atlanta Beltline is a massive project that has already benefited the Atlanta neighborhoods adjacent to the green space. The Atlanta Beltline is a 22 mile loop of trails, green space and transit.
At the time of writing this, this project is in many stages of completeness. The best resource I found is this map which shows the sections of the trail that are completed in green, under construction in yellow and future development in purple.
For example, in the Inman Park neighborhood along the Beltline, you can see the impact. There is a large section of redevelopment next to the Krog Street Market with restaurants, bars and shops
PATH 400 Greeway
Located in Buckhead, the PATH 400 Greenway is a planned 5.2 mile Greenway that will connect many of the parks in Buckhead.
It is planned that this Greenway will eventually connect to the Atlanta Beltline and other North Fulton green ways.
The Path 400 is very much under construction at the time of writing this. If you want to check out the completed sections, this page documents the sections that are complete and in progress.
Big Creek Greenway
The Big Creek Greenway multi-use trail system covers multiple cities and counties near Atlanta. The Greenway is constantly expanding and sections are being completed to join the segments together. There are even plans for other towns, like Milton, to create additional sections and access points in the future.
You may hear this trail called many names, like the Alpharetta Greenway, the Roswell Greenway or the Forsyth Greenway. They all refer to the Big Creek Greenway. Here are the sections:
Big Creek Greenway – Roswell and Alpharetta Section
The Alpharetta Greenway 8 mile trail on a 12 foot wide multiuse paved path. As of the time or writing this, the Greenway starts in Roswell at Big Creek Park, and for now, ends in Alpharetta at Union Hill Park.
The are multiple parking lots along the trail. Please see our detailed post on the Alpharetta Greenway for more information.
Big Creek Greenway: Forsyth Section
The Big Creek Greenway continues in at the Halcyon Trailhead at 6265 Cortland Walk Alpharetta, GA 30005.
The trail is a little over 16 miles long.
The ending spot of this trail is at Sawnee Mountain Preserve Trailhead 4075 Spot Road Cumming, GA 30040. At the end of the Forsyth Greenway, you will be right next to one of our favorite hikes near Atlanta at the Indian Seats Trail.
Along the Forsyth Greenway, there is a section that is future development. See map for future trail sections.
Silver Comet Trail
Are you looking for one of the longest bike trails near Atlanta? The Silver Comet Trail starts in Smyrna and ends on the Georgia and Alabama border almost 62 miles away.
Not long enough?
If you feel like extending your ride, the Silver Comet Trail connects with the Chief Ladiga Trail in Alabama. This can add another 30 miles to your bike ride.
Talk about a long bike trail near Atlanta!
These trails are fully paved and built on abandoned train tracks.
Roswell Riverwalk
The Roswell Riverwalk is a multi-use trail that parallels the Chattahoochee River. Part of the trail is concrete, but most of it is made of composite decking and is elevated above the river bed.
The trail is an out and back trail that is a little over 7 miles in length.
The are multiple parking lots along the trail. Please see our detailed post on the Roswell Riverwalk for more information.
Arabia Mountain Trail
Located just 20 minutes east of Atlanta near the town of Stonecrest, the Arabia Mountain Path offers over 30 miles of paved multi use trails.
Along the way, there is plenty to see like covered bridges, mill ruins and many farms.
There are many parking locations along the trail. It’s best to take a look at trail map. Here is a link to a printable pdf version of the map.
While most of the trail is relatively flat, there are a few sections with slight elevation gain.
Suwanee Greenway
The Suwanee Creek Greenway is a 4 mile multi-use bike trail near Atlanta. The trail is a mix of concrete surface and boardwalk.
The start of the trail can be accessed at Suwannee Creek Park. There are multiple access points so be sure to check the Suwannee Greenway trail map. This trail connects the Suwannee Creek Park with the George Pierce Park.
Stone Mountain Path
The Stone Mountain Path is an 18 mile ride from Centennial Olympic Park to Stone Mountain Park.
Along the way, you will pass by some of the best sites and attractions in Atlanta like the:
- Georgia Aquarium
- Mercedes Benz Stadium
- Dr. Martin Luther King National Historical Park
- The Carter Center
- The Krog Street Market
And many more…
Part of the Path is “on road” riding, so this is trail is better served for more advances road riders. Other parts of the trail follow freedom park trail and other rails to trails paths.
For a more detailed look at which sections of the trail are on roads, please see this printable map.
Noonday Creek Trail
Little did I know that there are two sections of the Noonday Creek Trail.
I only knew about the one starting in downtown Woodstock. You can access the Noonday Creek Trail just behind the Reformation Brewery.
The first section of the trail will take you to Woofstock Dog Park. From there you may either continue on the Noonday Creek Trail or take the Towne Lake Pass trail.
There is a second, much longer section that starts on the southwest edge of Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. The trail runs 7 miles along the Noonday Creek and ends near Towne Center Mall.
There are plans developed to eventually connect the two making this Atlanta bike trail much longer.
Carrolton Greenbelt
The Carrolton Greenbelt is a multi use path that encircles the town of Carrolton. This loop is the perfect place for an over 16 mile round trip bike ride near Atlanta.
Along the greenbelt are many parking lots, parks and bicycle repair shops.
Refer to the Carrolton Greenbelt Map for more information on parking and other amenities along the way.
Piedmont Park Loop
There is a near 4 mile loop in Piedmont Park. At times the park is crowded with pedestrians.
If you need a bike rental, you can rent on Piedmont Park throught Relay Bike Share.
From Piedmont Park, you can also access the Atlanta Beltline.
Avoid areas where sign prohibit cycling.
Proctor Creek Greenway
Another PATH foundation project in Atlanta, the Proctor Creek Greenway is a 2.4 mile that runs from the Bankhead MARTA station to the West Highland neighborhood.
There is future planned expansion of this Greenway that will continue along Proctor Creek. Please see the Proctor Creek Greenway trail map for more information.
