Guide to Olde Rope Mill Park – Something For Everyone

Olde Rope Mill Park in Woodstock, GA has something for everyone, from many mountain biking trails to hiking. It is also located on the banks of the Little River, so bring a kayak, stand up paddle board or fishing pole. On weekends, expect lots of company, especially when it is nice outside.

Olde Rope Mill Park is a great park near Atlanta. It is located in Woodstock, one of the wonderful suburbs of Atlanta.

Olde Rope Mill is conveniently located about 6 miles north of the start of 575 making it easily accessible from downtown Atlanta, Marietta, Alpharetta and Roswell.

If you don’t get there early enough, parking can be a challenge. They opened up a second lot just a short walk up the road. Just a couple years ago, Olde Rope Mill was a best kept secret, nowadays the secret is out.

Mountain Biking Trails at Rope Mill Park

The mountain biking trails at Rope Mill park are some of the best mountain biking trials in Atlanta and range from beginner to expert. Expect to get your heart pumping on this hilly terrain. There used to be two sets of loop trails, but they recently added a third set of loops.

They double as walking trails (in the opposite direction,) but if walking amongst bikers is not your thing, there are other walking trails at the Olde Rope Mill Park.

Trail Difficulty

Trails are marked as beginner, intermediate, advanced or expert. The trails at Olde Rope Mill Park are beginner or intermediate.

If you are bringing children for the first time, you might want to check our Dupree Park a few miles away. They created a family mountain bike trail to get your little riders started on the trails.


Explorer Trails at Olde Rope Mill Park

At the bottom parking lot, while facing the river, head left. You will ride up a stone path and under the I575 bridge. On the right hand side you will find the entrance to the explorer trail. Signs mark the direction of the trail by day. Hikers will be walking the opposite direction and should provide mountain bikers with the right of way.

If you are with a beginner, stick with the first loop. It is mostly flat with some good downhill runs. If you are up for a challenge, loop two provides a long downhill section followed by a long uphill. Loop three has roots and lots of short ups and downs.

  • Loop 2 – 1.5 miles. Intermediate
  • Loop 3 – 1 miles. Intermediate

Avalanche Trails at Olde Rope Mill Park

Near the rest rooms, in the main parking lot you will find the trail entrance to the Avalanche trails. All of these trails run fast and provide a lot of short to moderate up and down runs. If you don’t have experience with singletracks, you probably want to work up to these trails.

Avalanche trail lengths and difficulty

  • Loop 1 – 1.5 miles. Intermediate
  • Loop 2 – 2.25 miles. Intermediate
  • Loop 3 – 2.5 miles. Intermediate

The Mill Trails at Olde Rope Mill Park

The Mill trails are the newest set of singletrack trails at Olde Rope Mill Park. They can be access by crossing the bridge across the river at the main parking lot. These trials are slightly flatter and seem to run faster than the other sections of fun. This makes these trails fun and a little more approachable for beginners.

Moore’s pass is an easy ride that approaches to the trials. At the end of this trail, you can access the other trails.

  • Moore’s Pass – .5 miles. Beginner
  • Raceway – 1.8 miles. Beginner
  • Turbine – 1.0 miles. Intermediate
  • Powerhouse – 1.8 miles. Intermediate

Hiking and Walking

You are free to hike the mountain bike trails at Olde Rope Mill Park. If you are a hiker, you will need to pay attention to the day and hike in the opposite direction of the mountain bikers. If you see bikers coming, just step to the side and let them pass by. Hiking the mountain bike trails is a great workout due to all the elevation changes.

Given the trails are all loops, you can customize your hiking experience to about any trial length you want.

There is also the Trestle Rock Trail, which is a paved walking trail the runs along the banks of the Little River.


Kayak, Stand Up Paddle Board, or Canoe

Drop your kayak or board by the bottom parking lot, or if you get a lucky spot just park at the bottom. The river bank at the park is quite easily accessible to drop a kayak in the water and hop in.

If you feel up for it, you can kayak 1.5 miles down the Little River to the Lake Allatoona waterfall. If it’s nice, you can bring a bathing suit and hang out by the waterfall. It can get a little crowded, so plan your time accordingly.
