I’ve been meaning to visit Bold Monk Brewing Company for a few months now, ever since we went to Max Lager’s and tried one of their beers. I love Belgian style beer, that are done right. Bold Monk has a few on tap. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try them all!

We were downtown and heading north, back to home at around the lunch hour. I decided to take a detour and check out the brewery. Why not, I had a couple hours to kill before the “important” college football game started.

Below, you will find how our impressions of the brewery, the food, service and of course how the beer was.

Bold Monk Brewery

The Bold Monk Brewing Company is located in an industrial complex in the Upper Westside of Atlanta.

There are a number of other breweries in the area. If I had the time, I would have stopped in all of them. The breweries in the area include Scofflaw’s, Steady Hand, Fire Maker, Round Trip and Steady Hand are all within a mile or so.

This reminds me, I need to add Round Trip Brewery to our running list of Atlanta Breweries, which is now 48 at the time of writing this.

The brewery entrance is actually on the side of the building and has a unique entrance.

Once inside, the main bar is very prominent and central to the main restaurant space.

Upstairs is a beautiful event space. When I was there, there was a wedding or baby shower going on. I didn’t want linger, so I quickly snapped a photo and moved on. Maybe, if someone from the brewery reads this, they can send a photo that does better justice, because this space is very cool!

From upstairs, you can access one of the best beer gardens in Atlanta. Unfortunately, the beer garden wasn’t popular this day, due to the rain.

The Restaurant And The Tap Room Experience

The service at the restaurant was excellent. Every staff member we encountered was extremely friendly and engaging. The service really exceeded my expectations. It was almost like being welcomed into a friends house.

Monk burger at Bold Monk Brewing Company

I ordered the Monk Burger, which is a double patty with cheese and caramelized onions. The Brioche bun was a nice touch.

It was an above average burger and I added it in the running for the our best burger in Atlanta.

The burger came with Belgian frites, probably to make this American meal and little more European. It came with a European dipping sauce with the fries.

I asked for ketchup.

I spent enough time living in the Netherlands to know it is mayonnaise based. It’s not that it tastes bad, it just that ketchup is so much better on fries!

Agree?

My son, who had just wrapped up a soccer match downtown saw that brunch was being served and went for the blueberry pancakes and a side of bacon. He devoured it and asked if we could come back tomorrow.

On tap, I went for the Discipline Dubble. This beer was excellent. It reminded me of my days wandering the streets of Old Town Antwerp and stopping by all the pubs and sampling whatever dubble they had on draft.

My second beer, I asked for something with lower potency. The waitress suggested the Chant Lager.

Lagers are becoming more of my go to these days. This one had a nice pilsner bitterness to it. It was slightly spicy and delicious. I liked it so much, I ordered a 6 pack to go.

I took an IPA to go, it was very good. In my opinion, the category is very competitive and the beer really needs to shine to stand out.

By far, my favorites at Bold Monk were the dubble and lager. These two beers were excellent.
