Last weekend we visited downtown Woodstock and popped into Reformation Brewery after a morning of shopping for antiques and window shopping through the town. This was my first time visiting Woodstock, and I didn’t realize what I was missing.

The town is a mix of old and new. Train tracks run parallel to the main street. The old train station is converted into a restaurant where patrons were sitting outside enjoying lunch. But we didn’t stop in there.

As a craft beer aficionado, I had my sites set on the Reformation Brewery. The inside of the brewery is small, but the outside has plenty of seating. From picnic tables to Adirondack chairs. All the seating has tree coverage to provide shade on hot Georgia days.

While I enjoyed my first beer, the kids and wife walked just across the street to a wonderful park. We literally needed to tear the kids away from the park to enjoy some barbecue.

Reformation does have some great brews, but this brewery didn’t rank as a best brewery in Georgia. Even still, we had a great time visiting this brewery and they have many tasty beers.

Quennie’s BBQ

If you are like me and love smoked wings, you will not be disappointed. The whole wings are smoked and the meat just falls right off the wing bone. The spicy BBQ and the Alabama style BBQ were both tasty pairings with the wings.

Afterwards I had a brisket sandwich. I cook brisket on my pellet smoker and I never achieved as tender a brisket. Even comparing this brisket with other of my favorite BBQ restaurants in metro Atlanta, they do not even come close to how tender this was.

The kids shared a pulled pork plate with fries. The pulled pork was great, but the real winners were the wings and the brisket.

We really enjoyed Quennie’s and I am already trying to plan my return.

Reformation Brewery

Visiting this brewery was the real reason I was in Woodstock. You see, I am on a quest to visit all of the breweries in Atlanta.

I recently read that the brewery was started by Spencer Nix, who is credited with many jobs and pastor being one of them.

The Brew

If you read this blog so far, you know I enjoy a New England Style IPA, so I had to get a pour. I was a little skeptical because I tried Nolan the Wanderer before, but it lacked something, or maybe it was just the Champagne-style India Pale Ale that I was not accustomed to. Anyway, the Avenue of the Palms is a New England Style. The taste reminded me of coming off a long day on the slopes in Stowe, VT and enjoying a pint. It was very delicious, but not overpowering.

I also tried the JOGR. This juicy lager is something else. I really enjoyed it. It has a malty taste, but a punch of hops in the middle and finishes quite nicely. The beer has a flavor that makes you want another pour.

I will definitely be looking for JOGR in the stores. It would be the perfect, after yard work, brew.

Outside seating at Reformation Brewery

As mentioned the brewery had lots of outdoor seating in this Georgia beer garden, perfect for coronavirus. The inside has a walk up bar, and some more seating indoor and out. Inside, they have a little swag for purchase or takeaway brews.

Next visit, I want to sample their sour beers. That’s the best thing about visiting your local brewery, there is always something new to sample.

Olde Rope Mill Park is not far if you are up for mountain biking, hiking or kayaking. Just be sure to get outside before sipping brews and not the other way around.
