About Chamblee GA

Chamblee, Georgia is a city in Dekalb county that is located inside the perimeter of Atlanta. Chamblee a distinct city, separate from Atlanta. However it is considered a suburb of Atlanta.

Chamblee is located to the east of Brookhaven, north of North Druid Hills, south of Dunwoody and west of Doraville.

A significant portion of this suburb is dedicated to the Dekalk-Peachtree Airport. PDK is a county-owned airport.

Chamblee is a diverse city that embraces change. You can see it in the murals and in the people you meet.

It is also home to Atlanta’s Chinatown. It’s not a Chinatown that you would see in other major cities, but there is a large strip mall with many Asian restaurants and shops.

When you visit the area, you will see old Chamblee mixed with brand new development. In fact, there are many redevelopment projects in various stages of completion.

Brief History

In the 1900’s, the city of Chamblee was primarily dairy farms.

The town was also situated at the intersection of two major train lines. One was a passenger train with the destination of Charlotte, NC. The other train was more local and served as a commuter train with the factories in the nearby suburb of Roswell.

Chamblee was also previously known as Camp Gordon, during the two World Wars. The military roots can still be seen at at the 57th Fighter Group Restaurant at the Peachtree-DeKalb Airport.

In more recent decades, Chamblee has seen explosive population growth. In fact from 2010 to 2020 the population tripled.

Today, you will see many construction projects in various states of development to keep up with the housing demand.

Name Origin of Chamblee GA

The train station in the area was known as Roswell Junction. Many felt that this name was too close to the name of neighboring Atlanta suburb, Roswell.

The name Chamblee was selected from a list of petitioners.

What Chamblee is Known For

Chamblee has experienced explosive population growth and the people that move to the area are diverse in cultures and backgrounds.

In fact, the city says it is best known as a “vibrant urban city with a diverse community and international flair.”

According to the census, population has grown from 9,892 in 2010 to 30,133 in 2020. That is a lot of population growth!

The median household income was just over $71,000 for 2021.

This city is a melting pot, with large populations of many ethic groups. In fact, 30% of the population in Chamblee is foreign born citizens.

While there are no major shopping malls in Chamblee, that doesn’t mean you cannot find something unique. The area is known for antiques and international shops.

Chamblee Antique Row is a section of downtown Chamblee with hundreds of antique dealers, shops and restaurants. If you walk down Broad St. and along the intersection at Peachtree Rd you will definitely find something unique. Atlanta Chinatown Mall is a large strip mall that features many restaurants, a food court and shops.

Parks in Chamblee

There are two main parks in Chamblee, although there are a few more smaller greenspaces and playgrounds.

  • Dresdan Park is a 24 acre park that features a paved walking trail, playground and many sports fields, particularly soccer.
  • Keswick Park is 45 acre park with walking trails, playgrounds and sports like tennis, baseball, soccer and basketball.
